I have chosen the topic of world war 2 within the key stage 2 History choices, firstly i chose this as the subject appeals to me and i have an interest in leaning whilst researching as well creating some interesting designs. I have started of by looking at objects of memorabilia which at significant and recognisable to the children when learning. They look very uninteresting at the moment but this is just the first stage, i intend to add colour to the images from digital collage.
I have illustrated 2 different gas masks firstly so i have different view points, as im not sure of the layout of the book covers yet, but you also get a different feel for them. The below looks really scary and less 'real' where as the above i think is more realistic and the label adds a nice touch as children where tagged when sent to their new homes in the country.
An Anderson shelter was very important in the war and where people went to shelter and hide when bombs were being dropped. This is a really interesting area in the world war 2 topic for children, one way to illustrate this which could really well for a poster would be through how to build one, which is what i have illustrated above. If i am going to do this i need to look at it closer and find out more information and the above is not very clear.
These are different views of a built Anderson shelter, the below is much easier to recognise than the above, as the above is covered in grass and mud but below its covered in sand bags. I much prefer the below, not just because its easier to recognise but you get the sense of how small the shelter is and how many people had to stay in their for such long periods of time.
Airplanes are another area mentioned in the curriculum for world was 2, these illustrations look good and appeal to a 'male' audience but this is not what i want from it, i want both boys and girls to be interested in the subject. I will have to develop this further to the layout stage to see how it works.
Every one knows about ration books and what they are, but you dont know what they look like, there are various types of ration books such as the 2 illustrated here. This would work really nice as a poster and showing how you would use it etc
